In the framework of the Joint Research Centre's Blue Seminars on aquatic processes and water technology, the JRC's Environment Institute is organizing a seminar on "Phytoremediation at hazardous waste sites". It will take place in Ispra, Italy, on 15 May 1996.

Phytoremediation is the use of vegetation for the in-situ treatment of hazardous wastes. Plants have shown the ability to withstand greater concentrations of organic pollutants than most micro-organisms. They can take up the chemicals quickly and convert them to less toxic metabolites. The seminar will present recent research results of pilot and full-scale applications in this field.
