Within the framework of the ACTS programme for advanced communication technologies and services, DG XIII of the European Commission is hosting the Fourth International Distributed Summer School on Advanced Broadband Communications on 9-12 July 1996.

The theme of this year's school is "The convergence of engineering cultures in telecommunications and information technology". The school plans to interconnect sites in most European countries, including Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, The Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.

All these sites will be interconnected through the terrestrial trans-European ATM network provided by the JAMES project of the ACTS programme, as well as ATM links over satellites or gateways to narrowband networks such as the Internet. This will require a complex collaboration between several institutions, ACTS National Hosts, public network operators and R&D projects within the framework of EU initiatives. Overall technical coordination is the responsibility of the NICE project of the ACTS programme.

The school will include tutorials, lectures, panels, interviews, debates and demonstrations of results achieved within ACTS projects. Specific issues to be addressed include:

- Information technology for telecommunications engineers;
- Service and telecommunications engineering for information technology engineers;
- Telecommunications and information system integration.
