An International Conference on Mediterranean Desertification, examining research results and policy implications in the field, will be held in Crete, Greece, from 29 October to 1 November 1996. It is organized jointly by DGs VI, XI, XII and XVI of the European Commission and the National Agricultural Research Foundation.

The conference aims to strengthen the visibility of EC policy action and research in the field of Mediterranean desertification, to promote awareness of the extent, nature and urgency of the desertification problem, and to translate scientific research into policy development and practical action.

Three round tables will be held on the following subjects: formulating research priorities; cooperation in combating desertification; and Mediterranean land use and sustainability.
