The eighth EU Contest for Young Scientists will be held in Helsinki/Vantaa, Finland, from 25 to 28 September 1996. An initiative of the Community's Training and Mobility of Researchers (TMR) programme, the contest was set up to promote the ideals of cooperation and interchange between young scientists.

Only contestants who have won a top prize in a national young scientists competition can be entered for the contest. They are entered by the national organizers of the national contests that are held across Europe. Currently over 20 European countries take part.

Up to 12 prizes will be given for the best projects:

- Three first prizes worth ECU 5,000;
- Three second prizes worth ECU 3,000;
- Six third prizes worth ECU 1,500.

The ninth EU Contest for Young Scientists will be held in September 1997 in Milan, Italy.
