EUROSPEECH'97, the fifth European conference on speech communication and technology will be held in Rhodes, Greece, from 22 to 25 September 1997.

The aim of the conference, which is organized by the European Speech Communication Association (ESCA) is to promote the latest developments in the field of speech communication and technology. The major areas to be covered are:

- Speech production and perception;
- Phonetics and phonology;
- Prosody;
- Neurophysiology, psychoacoustics and psycholinguistics of speech;
- Auditory modelling;
- Speech analysis and modelling;
- Neural networks for speech and language processing;
- Robust speech processing, signal enhancement and noise reduction;
- Text-to-speech synthesis;
- Speech and audio coding and transmission;
- Speech recognition and understanding;
- Spoken dialogue systems design;
- Speaker and language recognition;
- Spoken language resources, assessment, standards and human factors;
- Multimodal speech and language processing;
- Technology for speech, language and hearing disorders and aids for the communication-impaired;
- Speech and language engineering for telecommunications;
- Systems, hardware and architectures for speech processing;
- Applications of speech technology.

The organizers are interested in receiving abstracts of papers on the above topics for presentation at the conference. The deadline for receipt of abstracts is 1 February 1997.

As a complement to the conference, an ESCA workshop on intonation will take place in Athens, Greece, from 18 to 20 September 1997.
