The European Parliament, on the initiative of its Committee on Regional Policy, is organizing the "Conference of the European Parliament and Local Authorities of the European Union". The conference, which is being organized in cooperation with the Committee of the Regions of the European Union, will be held in Brussels, Belgium, from 1 to 3 October 1996.

This major European conference follows two held with the regions, in 1984 and 1991, and one held with local authorities in 1994. The purpose of the conference is to strengthen relations between the European Parliament and local authorities, and to hold a joint exchange of views on the prospects for the Intergovernmental conference and the introduction of Economic and Monetary Union.

Participants in the conference will include MEPs and 300 elected representatives of local authorities in the EU. Observers at the conference will include some 50 representatives of local government from European third countries, representatives of national parliaments and Ministers responsible for local and regional autonomous bodies.
