A conference on "Images and Science Education in Europe" will be held in Paris, France, on 3-4 October 1996. The conference is being organized by the European Commission (DG XII), in collaboration with CNRS Images/Media FEMIS, within the framework of the 13th "Rencontres Internationales de l'Audiovisuel Scientifique" and the European Science and Technology Forum.

One of the first possible application fields of image technology is scientific education and technological training. Educational television networks and programmes and multimedia products and networks are potentially powerful tools for acquiring scientific knowledge and learning advanced technologies.

In this field, Europe undoubtedly possesses real assets. Experiments with educational TV have been successfully conducted in several countries. European laboratories and enterprises have a strongly developed know-how as far as software is concerned. Many small dynamic companies supply original multimedia products. In order to exploit this potential fully, action needs to be undertaken at European level.

The objective of this conference is to review the possibilities for exploiting television and multimedia for scientific education and technological training, taking stock of the needs to fulfil and the hurdles to overcome. The conference will highlight successful experiments and compare different approaches and perspectives.

The general conclusions of the conference will be delivered by Mrs. Edith Cresson, European Commissioner responsible for research and education.
