PATINNOVA'97, the European Congress on patents and patent information, will take place in Vienna, Austria, on 5-7 May 1997. The congress is being organized jointly by the European Commission, the Austrian Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs, the European Patent Office and the Austrian Patent Office.

Failure to understand patents and the many ways in which they can be used results in the loss of many millions of ECU every year for European industry. PATINNOVA'97 will aim to improve understanding of this crucial commercial element of the innovation process. The three-day conference will cover three parallel themes:

- The value and use of patents as a source of information;
- How and when to use patents;
- Patents as a means of protection.

Special emphasis will be placed, in this year's conference, on information and experiences from Central and Eastern European countries.
