The first international workshop on "River basin modelling, management and flood mitigation" will be held in Delft, The Netherlands, from 13 to 15 February 1997. The workshop is supported by the European Community's specific RTD programme in the field of Environment and Climate.

The workshop is part of the RIBAMOD (river basin modelling) concerted action funded by the Environment and Climate programme. This action will examine long-term generic issues related to flooding within the framework of integrated river management. The concerted action has five broad functions:

- To identify difficulties arising from past management practices;
- To identify state-of-the-art in its area;
- To identify best practice;
- To take an overview of current EU research projects in the area;
- To identify research needs.

The aim of the workshop is stimulate contact between researchers working in this area. In particular, it should encourage exchanges of information, results and experience between existing programmes and practitioners.
