A seminar on "Language processing - Extracting information for business needs" will take place in London, UK, on 18-19 March 1997. The seminar, which is being organized by UNICOM and is supported by the European Commission (DG XIII), will address the emerging field of Information Extraction (IE).

Information Extraction is an important new language technology now emerging from laboratories into the market place. It will be a key method for helping deal with information overload in the rapidly expanding world of electronic text.

The seminar will bring together experts in the field who will describe the technology, its relationship to other languages technologies now available, and its use in commercial environments. Mr. Roberto Cencioni (Head of Unit, DGXIII/E-5 - Language Engineering) of the European Commission will deliver a presentation on the theme "The European Scene - IE in the context of language processing in the EU". Other themes or areas to be covered by the conference include:

- The British perspective;
- General IR systems;
- Multilingual application systems;
- Speech applications of IE;
- Tools related to IE.
