PATINNOVA'97, the European Congress on patents and patent information, will take place in Vienna, Austria, on 5-7 May 1997. The congress is being organized jointly by the European Commission, the Austrian Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs, the European Patent Office and the Austrian Patent Office.

Failure to understand patents, and the many ways in which they can be used, results in the loss of many millions of ECU every year for European industry. PATINNOVA'97 will aim to improve understanding of this crucial commercial element of the innovation process. The three-day conference will cover three parallel themes:

- The value and use of patents as a source of information;
- How and when to use patents;
- Patents as a means of protection.

Mr. Robert Verrue, Director-General of DG XIII of the European Commission (Telecommunications, information market and exploitation of research) will present an opening address to the conference and Mr. Vincente Parajon Collada, Deputy Director-General of DG XIII will chair the conference. The closing address will be delivered by Mr. Heinz Zourek, Deputy Director-General of DG XV (Internal market and financial services).

Other high-level Commission officials participating in the debates will include: Mr. Giulio Grata, Director of DG XIII/D (Dissemination and exploitation of RTD results, technology transfer and innovation); Mr. Mario Bellardinelli, Head of Unit XIII/D-2 (Information and dissemination of scientific and technical knowledge); and Mr. Paul Waterscoot, Director of DG XV/E (Intellectual and industrial property rights).

Special emphasis will be placed, in this year's conference, on information and experiences from Central and Eastern European countries.
