POPE'97 - Perspectives on protein engineering
The POPE conferences serve as a major meeting place for representatives of "Structure and function of proteins" projects funded under the European Community's specific RTD programme in the field of Biotechnology (BIOTECH). Although open to delegates worldwide, particular emphasis is placed on advances made in structural biology in Europe and the main topics of the conference programme will reflect the key priorities highlighted in the European Commission's report on "Structural biology in Europe" published in January 1997.
In particular, the conference will focus on the discovery of new genes, biomolecular design and engineering and new developments in protein expression essential for new drug discovery and the development of biotechnology products.
The conference will also host the founding meeting of the European "Structural Biology Industry Platform" (SBIP). The creation of the SBIP was encouraged by the European Commission in order to provide a structure for channelling information on resource opportunities in Europe and to encourage more effective networking in this area. The main objective is to maximise the technology transfer from academia to industry at large, beyond the relatively few industries having the human, technical and economic resources to participate in Community projects as full partners.
