Solid biofuels for carbon dioxide mitigation
Biofuels are frequently referred to as a carbon dioxide-neutral source of energy. A switch from fossil fuels to biofuels thus implies greatly reduced emissions of carbon dioxide. The conference will address issues relating to the economic viability of biofuels will attempt to assess under what conditions, and to what extent, biofuels really are carbon dioxide neutral. Discussions will be based on successful examples of the use of solid biofuels.
Papers are invited under the following general topics:
- Systems considerations of full energy production chains based on biofuels;
- Cost effectiveness and other economic aspects in relation to biofuels;
- Carbon dioxide and other environmental impacts of parts of the biofuel production chain.
The conference will last for two days including a field visit to a Salix plantation and a co-generation plant. The event falls within the "Evaluating Biofuels as a Means of Atmospheric Carbon Dioxide Mitigation" project, funded by the Community's ALTENER programme for the promotion of renewable energy sources. It is also supported by the International Energy Agency (IEA Bioenergy Task XV).
