NAV'97 - Global Navigation
The NAV'97 conference will take place at a unique moment in the history of navigation. Satellite systems are not yet capable of meeting, in a single global system, the most demanding requirements of every category of user at sea, on land and in the air. GPS and GLONASS, now in service, were both designed as military systems and users are now expressing a strong preference for a Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) under international civil control.
As a matter of urgency, the European Union has to decide on the extent of its participation in GNSS if it wishes to influence the form of the ultimate system and benefit from the considerable commercial opportunities that will be presented.
The NAV'97 conference will provide an update on the latest developments leading to the implementation of the European Radionavigation Plan (ERNP) in support of GNSS, and will include the incorporation of terrestrial and satellite-based systems, together with questions of cost-benefit and recovery.
The conference will look at real and proposed commercial applications in navigation, tracking and positioning. It will also look at studies carried out by the European Group of Institutes of Navigation (EUGIN) in support of the development of the European Radionavigation Plan and will highlight the opportunities for European research and industry. It will consider the future for the satellite navigation industry, together with its commercial applications and potential markets.
