The first European Netd@ys, sponsored by the European Commission, will take place between 18 and 25 October 1997. Involving some 10,000 schools from around Europe, the initiative is designed to encourage the interconnection of regional and national school networks at European level.

The Netd@ys concept is based on an idea from California, where volunteers worked to establish Internet connections in schools across the state. The European Netd@ys will have a slightly different focus, with the emphasis on encouraging partnerships between public authorities and industry.

The European Netd@ys will encourage interconnection between schools; stimulate development and dissemination of educational content of European interest; promote training and support for teachers and trainers in integrating technology in teaching methods; and raise public awareness of the educational benefits and opportunities of audiovisual equipment and multimedia products.

By encouraging as many networking initiatives as possible during the Netd@ys period, it is hoped to reduce the fragmentation of European networks and resources, and raise public awareness of the possibilities. In addition, encouraging public/private partnerships aims to ensure that European school pupils will continue to have access to up-to-date facilities and services.
Further information on the wide variety of activities taking place during the European Netd@ys initiative may be found on the World Wide Web, at:
