CRIS'98, the fourth conference on "Current Research Information Systems in Europe: The way to innovation", will take place in Luxembourg from 12 to 14 March 1998. Organized by the European Commission (DG XIII), CRIS'98 is designed to bring together organizations providing research information in Europe in order to open up resources to a wider audience and increase the exploitation of existing information.

One of the objectives of CRIS'98 is to promote the exploitation of current research information systems by industry. With this objective in mind, it aims to encourage better integration of new technologies in order to exploit research information systems more efficiently, and better meet users' needs. Keynote speeches will look at the likely costs and returns of the development of research information systems in the Information Society.

Following the opening sessions, two parallel sessions will look at:

- The marketing and exploitation of current research information systems;
- Production and dissemination of current research information systems.

A series of demonstrations of applications and services relating to research information systems will be held at the same time as the parallel sessions. In addition, there will also be a Cybercafe, where participants can try out existing services and new developments.

The conference takes place in the context of on-going work supported by the INNOVATION programme, including:

- The ERGO (European Research Gateways Online) initiative which aims to establish a single point of entry to R&D databases in the Member States;
- CERIF, the Common European Research Information Format developed to facilitate access to information on on-going research projects in Europe, which is currently under revision.

It will also build on the work of the EUROCRIS platform, which provides an informal forum for the development of research documentation practices and stimulates European cooperation in the field.
