Ninth European Congress on Biotechnology

The Ninth European Congress on Biotechnology (ECB9) will take place in Brussels, Belgium, from 11-15 July 1999.
The Congress, which is supported by the European Commission within the framework of the Biotechnology RTD programme, will consist of four parallel symposia focusing on biotechnology in the agro-food, health, environmental and chemical sectors. There will also be a full four-day programme covering life sciences, bioinformatics, engineering, and physical and social sciences.
The Congress will run concurrently with the BIOTOP'99 Exhibition - a specialized trade fair focusing, as with the Congress, on four main areas of biotechnology: agro-food, health, environment and chemicals. For each of these industrial areas, some of the sub-areas addressed include plant conception and construction; equipment, manufacturing and engineering; process monitoring and control; product formulation and packaging; marketing and public perception.
To take advantage of the impact made by organizing two big events like ECB9 and Biotop'99 concurrently, a special programme with roundtables and possibly an evening session is being considered. This major joint event will provide an ideal showcase for the positive contribution of biotechnology to the human society for the emerging 21st century.
