A European symposium on lactose will be held in The Hague, The Netherlands, on 25 and 26 March 1999. This two-day symposium is organized by the Carbohydrate Research Foundation, a non-profit organization which aims to improve the transfer of knowledge between interested parties at European level.

The aim of the symposium is to present current and future research on lactose and its derivatives, and will cover the following:

- Introducing lactose and its physical and chemical properties;
- Food applications of lactose, including confectionery and yeasted doughs;
- The nutritional aspects of lactose and derivatives, and the nutritional implications of lactose intolerance;
- Derivatives of lactose, including lactitol, lacobionic acid and lactulose;
- Pharmaceutical applications.
