Launched in 1991, the TIDE pilot action aims to stimulate the creation of a single market in rehabilitation technology (RT), i.e. all the technologies provided directly to elderly and/or disabled people to enable them to live more independent lives.

The first TIDE Congress will be held in Brussels at the Palais des Congres on 6-7 April 1993. Comprising three parallel sessions and an exhibition, it will bring together people from inside and outside Europe to share the results of TIDE projects and to discuss the future of RT. Papers have been called for on the following topics:

- Results of R&D programmes:
. Benefits for RT resulting from basic and applied industrial research carried out in Community or national R&D programmes;
. Suggested RT targets and development profiles to be explored by TIDE;
. The impact on RT of the results of information technology R&D projects in areas like microelectronics, communications, bioengineering and computer hard- and software;

- R&D programme methodology:
. Analysis of factors that influence R&D orientation;
. Specific requirements of elderly or disabled people;
. Areas that are challenging in their technical complexity or their innovativeness in general technical production processes;
. The implication of the involvement of multidisciplinary fields, human factor techniques, or complex evaluation and verification methodologies in RT;

- Market and service delivery issues relating to areas such as technology transfer, information dissemination, legislation and consumer involvement.
