25 June 1998 - 25 June 1998
Belgium
The European Commission will organize the second European policy forum, to be held in Brussels, Belgium, from 24 to 26 June 1998. The aim of the event is to advance the debate on the future of social policy by mobilising all those involved to promote a stronger social dimension in the future development of the EU.

Forum'98 will build on the first European social policy forum, held in March 1996. The event will provide a focal point for the discussion of the most important social issues of today with the key players in the European institutions, representatives of NGOs, social partners and national authorities in Member States.

The event will comprise a series of parallel sessions, which will cover the following:

- The future world of work;
- Social protection: adapting to changing needs;
- Promoting participation and citizenship.

There will also be a discussion group on the Internet, opened by Mr. Padraig Flynn, European Commissioner for employment, industrial relations and social affairs. This will provide all interested parties with the opportunity to participate in the topics for debate covered in the parallel sessions.

The event will also feature an open forum, where discussion areas will be arranged as a kind of trade fair, with a series of discussions on specific topics. This will enable participants to contribute to, and discuss, their topics of interest. The general theme of the open forum will be "Participation, commitment and rights", with the eight discussion stands focusing on the following:

- Mobilising for a social Europe;
- Combating racism and xenophobia;
- Fighting for jobs creation;
- A call for new ideas using new technology;
- The role of women and men in tomorrow's society;
- Delivering services;
- Doing it for ourselves (voluntary work and social solidarity);
- Equal rights for all.

An exhibition will remain open throughout the Forum, providing the various participating organizations with the opportunity to present themselves and their work. This will feature four main groups:

- Non-governmental organizations;
- Social partners;
- European Commission and the Foundation for the Improvement of Living and Working Conditions;
- Associations, foundations and companies.
