The sixth international congress on information and communications technologies in tourism will be held in Innsbruck, Austria, from 20 to 22 January 1999. The aim of the conference is to discuss changes within the tourism industry brought about by new technologies and the increasing role of information technologies in this sector.

The event will demonstrate the wide range of opportunities presented by new technological developments and show how to capitalise on these opportunities and achieve competitive advantage. The entire scope of the tourism industry will be covered during the congress, including computer reservation systems, tourism boards, tour operators and travel agencies. Key features will include a scientific and applied track, an exhibition and an award ceremony for "best practice" in the design and creation of Web sites and Web applications in tourism.

Plenary sessions will address a range of topics under the following headings:

- Focus on the consumer - understanding their behaviour and the new opportunities that technology will bring them;
- Innovation in the electronic marketplace - new players and old players react;
- New payment technology and electronic marketing for destination and SMEs;
- The consumer in the electronic tourism marketplace.

The scientific track of the conference will address the following:

- Knowledge management in tourism;
- Changing consumer behaviour through information technologies;
- Using information technology to support choice and skills;
- Engineering tourism applications.
