Human Frontier Science Program celebrates 10th anniversary
The French Minister of Education, Claude Allègre, will open the anniversary celebrations for HFSP, which has made important contributions to basic research in molecular biology and brain sciences. The former Japanese Prime Minister Yasuhiro Nakasone, will also be present, and as HFSP's founder and initiator, and will be awarded an Honorary Doctorate of the University Louis Pasteur of Strasbourg.
World-renowned scientists will then engage in a round-table discussion on perspectives in the life sciences in the next century.
Two scientific workshops will also be held between 31 May and 2 June 1999. These will focus on the 'Replicon Theory and Cell Division' and 'The Regulation of Sleep'.
HFSP's aim is to promote basic research through interdisciplinary cooperation across continental borders. The members of the G7 founded the organisation in 1989. In 1990, the European Union (EU) and, in 1991, Switzerland joined HFSP, which has particular concern for young scientists. So far, HFSP has:
- Awarded 1246 post-doctoral fellowships;
- Supported 1571 scientists working in international projects with research grants;
- Supported, in 1998 alone, more than 400 laboratories.
