Cogeneration enthusiasts argue that the combined use of heat and power to produce energy can be up to ninety percent more efficient than traditional methods. To promote this energy technology, representatives from the industry will join policy-makers and researchers at the sixth annual conference and exhibition of 'COGEN Europe' in Brussels on 14 and 15 October 1999.

The conference will focus on marketing strategies for cogeneration and how to realise its potential. It will include discussions on the following topics:

- European level strategies;
- Keynote papers looking at how to achieve the doubling of the target for cogeneration in Europe from the Member States' perspective;
- A panel debate to investigate business strategies for cogeneration, with the participation of senior company representatives;
- The implications of substantial growth in the sector for the cogeneration industry;
- The different national policies needed for this growth to take place.

Denmark currently produces fifty percent of its national energy requirements using cogeneration technologies - more than any other EU Member State. This compares with 40 percent in The Netherlands and just 5 percent in the United Kingdom. COGEN Europe, the conference organiser, is urging energy producers to take up cogeneration, and predicts that in the next ten years the investment opportunity could reach 100,000 million euro. The conference will therefore examine a business structure to achieve this goal.
