Worldwide online education discussed online
Global Learn Day III will begin at 0000 hours GMT on 9 October 1999, at http://www.bfranklin.edu(opens in new window)
The event aims to show that education and training can now be affordably delivered to every corner of the globe via the Internet. One of the highlights of the day will be a special stop in Kosovo for an online conference where educators and students will discuss the reconstructing of their education system.
'There are more than 100,000 college courses currently online - a number that is expected to grow to over one million within five years,' said John Hibbs, director of the Benjamin Franklin Institute of Global Education. 'Our event is a convincing demonstration that students in Boston can take courses from Bombay.'
Keynote addresses will be given by Vinton Cerf, the 'father of the Internet', Dr Robin Mason of the Open University in England, the largest provider of distance education in the world, and US Senator Conrad Burns, chairman of the subcommittee on communications.
Internet users planning to attend Global Learn Day III can reserve their virtual seats through the software tool, INTERVU audience which can be downloaded from the event website.
