Food safety in Europe - challenges and opportunities
Keynote speakers from the food authorities, industry, consumer bodies, research and the European Commission will attend the event, dubbed 'Food safety in Europe - challenges and opportunities'.
The importance of food safety as Europe expands and the population grows will be discussed during an introductory session. Speakers from the UK government and the European Commission will outline future work needed and the steps necessary to achieve their aims.
There will also be sessions on food microbiology, food safety and processing
food toxicology, food safety and the food chain and the future of food safety in Europe.
The closing session will see the introduction of the White paper on food safety and the Green paper on the new 'European Food Authority', along with a comparison of food safety activities in the USA and on a global scale. Consumer issues will also be addressed in recognition of the strong impact that consumer opinion has on food safety and quality.
The event will close with a panel discussion integrating the above issues and how European research can contribute, providing further targeted input for the challenges and opportunities of food safety in Europe.
There will also be opportunities for networking, a proposers forum, a brokerage event and poster session - to include SMEs - on 19 October, from 1700 -19.00hrs.
The event organisers describe this as 'a unique opportunity for the food industry, SMEs, research organisations and universities to network and discuss their ideas and experiences'.
Poster abstracts are invited from participants. A final 50 will be selected for display.
