Science week @ Austria
It is the first time Austria has devoted a week of promotional activities to familiarise the wider public on the benefits and applications of the sciences. It will involve around 1,000 Austrian scientists from various educational and research establishments.
With a wide variety of sciences and humanities represented, it is hoped that individuals will be able to find their own area of interest.
Examples of events include:
- a Viennese philosophers' café in the Café Korb;
- a discussion on the New Testament takes place in a shop in Graz;
- medieval banquet food and poetry will be offered in the Residence building in Salzburg;
- the achievements of the Austrian Research Centre Seibersdorf, the largest Austrian research centre, will be presented in the government district of St Poelten;
- technologies for the handicapped are presented by the Vienna University of Technology;
- the University of Veterinary Medicine presents its research in a Viennese shopping centre;
- women scientists try to interest girls in studying at the Vienna University of Technology at an outdoor breakfast.
The opening event will take place on 18 May in the Parliament building in Vienna, featuring a magic chemistry show with coloured cabbage heads, infrared pictures of MPs in heated debates and robots playing football.
