ALIMED II, a European technology meeting on Mediterranean food: nutrition, health and traceability is planned for 25 and 26 June in Marseille, France. It is aimed at companies, research centres and nutritionists in the Mediterranean agro-food industry.

The event will cover the following topics:

- Mediterranean food: a model of health?
- Vegetal proteins in the diet: an advantage against ageing;
- Preserving one's health with fruit and vegetables? (olive oil and nutritional advantages; olive oil and heart disease; olive oil, tomatoes and carcinogenic risks);
- The Mediterranean diet: a nutritional mode to promote?
- The need for more thorough traceability;
- Fruit and vegetables (seafood products, GMO detection, traceability and communication);
- Technological solutions to improve the safety of food (packaging with integrated memory, the role of the electronic nose, the advantages and the perspectives of micro-electronics;
- The potential advances towards high quality food (Intelligence economical action ALIMEDA).

Personalised meetings will take place during the afternoon in order to provide delegates with the opportunity to initiate scientific, technological and business collaboration.

ALIMEDA partners will participate in the event through a presentation of European research programs for SMEs. Scheduled appointments will also be organised for companies willing to obtain further information on ALIMEDA and to study the possibilities to build a European Co-operative Research Action (CRAFT).

ALIMEDA aims to stimulate innovation in the Mediterranean food sector. The project started in January 2001 and will end in July 2002. It is run in seven countries: Cyprus, Greece, France, Italy, Israel, Spain and United Kingdom.
