An event organised by the Belgian Presidency of the European Union, and specifically by the Belgian deputy prime minister, Johan Vande Lanotte, will analyse the role of a social economy in sustainable development in Europe, on 13 and 14 November in Ghent.

The event will draw together representatives of cooperatives, mutual insurers and public officials from governments and European institutions to look at five key themes. These are:

- being a social economy company - a handicap or an opportunity?
- financial and economic partnerships - the opportunities and the threats
- do neighbourhood services guarantee greater social cohesion?
- the social economy - a principal player in sustainable development
- a statistical information system on the social economy
