The European Science Foundation, as part of the 1994 series of European Research Conferences, co-sponsored by the European Commission, will organize five meetings during May-August 1994:

- Natural and anthropogenically induced hazard (Earthquake Hazard), Granada, Spain, 14-19 May 1994. Though earthquake hazard in the Euro-Mediterranean region is relatively high, it is poorly understood and assessed. The meeting will focus on present research on earthquake origin, geographical distribution, seismic wave excitation and propagation and amplification by sedimentary basins, their affect on foundations and buildings, and social and economic implications. Existing national regulations will be considered. The closing date for applications to attend this conference is 14 February 1994.

- Nuclear Physics (Physics of High Energy Heavy ion Collisions), Vuosaari, near Helsinki, Finland, 17-22 June 1994: The aim of high energy heavy ion physics is to study strongly interacting matter at extreme densities and excitations. The field is interdisciplinary using methods and concepts from nuclear, particle and statistical physics. The conference will present and discuss open questions and possible approaches for their solutions. The application deadline is 15 February 1994.

- Inorganic Chemistry (Surface Organometallic Chemistry, Molecular Materials and Catalysis), Davos, Switzerland, 11-16 June 1994: The purpose of the fifth European Inorganic Chemistry Symposium is to discuss the chemistry of inorganic solids in the bulk and at the surface of bulk material. Specially designed organometallic molecules and metal coordination complexes play in many cases a crucial role in the preparation of inorganic solids. Gathering information about the structural details of these surfaces and the understanding of structure/reactivity relationships is a subject of intense study, while creation of the desired ordering is a timely area of research. It is hoped that a stimulating interdisciplinary exchange between these important areas of inorganic chemistry will occur during the meeting. The deadline for applications is three months before the conference date.

- Reactivity in Organized Microstructures (New Materials), Mont Saint Odile, near Strasbourg, France, 6-11 July 1994: The conference will focus on investigations of the relations between the structure, reactivity and physical properties of new materials made from organized microstructures (nanosized magnetic, metallic and semiconductor crystallites exhibiting non-conventional properties), on 2D and 3D new materials, on new organized assemblies and finally on industrial applications. The meeting will bring together research originating in chemistry, physics or industrial groups The application deadline is 6 March 1994.

- Supramolecularar Chemistry (Molecular Recognition from Biology to Materials), Mainz, Germany, 11-16 August 1994: This conference aims to look into the gap between chemistry, life science and materials science and to transfer biological concepts into synthetic models. The emphasis will be on chemical processes, but aspects of physical and especially biological recognition processes will also be presented in order to provide a broad basis for reflection and discussion. The deadline for applications is three months before the conference.
