At its first meeting, held in Brussels on 8 February 1994, the European Economic Area (EEA) Consultative Committee stressed that the establishment of the EEA was an opportunity for coordinating a new drive to stimulate growth and increase employment. European energy policy was also discussed.

The Committee, which is composed of 30 members of the European Free Trade Agreement (EFTA) Consultative Committee plus 30 members of the Economic and Social Committee (ESC) of the European Union, is one of two advisory bodies set up under the terms of the EEA Agreement (the other being a Joint Parliamentary Committee). The role of the Committee is to advise, through reports and resolutions, the EEA decision-making organs.

As well as settling procedural questions, the meeting discussed growth, competitivity and employment, calling for speedy implementation of the Commission's White Paper on this subject (COM(93) 700 of 5.12.1993). Both Committees have previously contributed to policy in this area by their input to the White Paper.

The economic and social interest groups discussed European energy policy, in particular pointing out the lack of coherence in this area. They addressed various points on the policy agenda and, because of the complexities of these issues, decided to bring up specific aspects at the next meeting of the Committee on 22 June 1994. In the interim period, the CSC and the ESC will send observers to the relevant internal meetings at which the question will be addressed.
