A seminar entitled "Energy urban renewal: policies and technologies" will take place in Rome on 23-24 June 1994. It is organized as part of the OPET initiative of the THERMIE programme of DG XVII (Directorate-General for Energy,) of the European Commission. The seminar is hosted by a member of the OPET network: the Italian organization ICIE (Cooperative Institute for Innovation).

This seminar focuses on urban settlements with a high concentration of energy consumption and the consequent waste and pollution associated with city areas.

One objective of this meeting is to promote the dissemination of information relating to energy retrofitting and renewal for urban situations. Particular attention will be devoted to energy policies and the role technology can play in the development of a sustainable response to the need for urban energy policies.

The main topics of the seminar will be the description and analyses of representative case studies, principally in the Mediterranean EU Member States. The four sessions include:

- Energy consumption and urban characteristics;
- Policies for urban energy programmes;
- Rational use of renewable energy technologies for urban renewal;
- Energy standards in publicly funded housing.

The targeted audience is local authority and public administration officials as well as urban planners and financial concerns.
