The second phase of the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) will take place in Tunis, Tunisia, from 16 to 18 November.

The first phase of WSIS took place in Geneva in 2003. Some 175 countries adopted a Declaration of Principles and Plan of Action. In the second phase of WSIS, efforts are being made to put the Plan of Action into motion, and working groups have been set up to find solutions and reach agreements in the fields of Internet governance and financing mechanisms.

The World Summit on the Information Society is intended to provide a unique opportunity for all key decision makers to gain a better understanding of this revolution and its impact on the international community. It aims to bring together Heads of State, Executives of United Nations Specialised Agencies, industry leaders, non-governmental organisations, media representatives and civil society representatives. The roles that are assumed by these various stakeholders in smoothly coordinating the setting up of the information society around the globe will be another major concern of the summit. For further information, please consult the following web address: http://www.itu.int/wsis/(opens in new window)
