In the framework of its Science and Technology for Development programme (STD), the European Commission is sponsoring a IUFRO Biodiversity Symposium on "Measuring and monitoring biodiversity in tropical and temperate forests". It will take place in Chiang Mai, Thailand, on 28 August to 2 September 1994.

The following issues will be discussed:

- Methods for measuring and monitoring biodiversity in forest ecosystems;
- The extent to which similar methods can be used in both tropical and temperate forests;
- Integration of measurements at different levels;
- Some examples of successful measuring and monitoring programmes in tropical and temperate forests.
