The Portuguese Presidency of the EU Council is organising a high-level conference on the future of science and technology in Europe, with the support of the European Commission. The event will take place on 8 October in Lisbon.

Representatives from international laboratories and organisations, national funding agencies, universities and research institutions are invited to participate, along with Nobel laureates, industrialists, the media and scientists.

The goal is to highlight the role of science and technology (S&T) in the Lisbon Strategy, and to contribute to the renewal of S&T priority status on the EU agenda. The Presidency has identified three main areas of political priority: human resources for science and technology, private investment in research and development (R&D) and public investment in R&D.

The conference will also address the ongoing debate on the European Commission's Green Paper on the European Research Area (ERA).

Portugal's Minister for Science, Technology and Higher Education, José Mariano Gago, will open the event, along with EU Science and Research Commissioner Janez Potocnik.Further information will be available
