Aquaculture training course, Wageningen, the Netherlands

Wageningen University, in cooperation with the Norwegian research institute Nofima Marine and the French scientific institute for agricultural research INRA, is organising a training course on the 'Design of breeding programmes for aquaculture' from 21 to 23 April in Wageningen, the Netherlands.

The aim of the three-day course is to provide people working in the field of fish (re-)production with knowledge that will enable them to design a simple breeding programme, evaluate the costs and benefits of such a programme, and to discuss sophisticated breeding programmes with professional breeding organisations. Through a mix of lectures and computer-aided practical sessions, participants will:
- know how basic principles of relatedness and genetic variation can be used to predict inbreeding and genetic improvement;
- understand that the most important aspect of breeding programmes is the organisation and recording of pedigree and phenotypes;
- know how to decide which traits are included in a breeding programme;
- understand how selection intensity drives inbreeding and genetic gain;
- be able to draft a breeding programme of their own design;
- understand the potential use of biotechnological and genomic tools in fish breeding.
