The European Commission's Joint Research Centre and the Silesian University of Technology, Institute of Power Engineering and Turbomachinery are organising a workshop on clean coal technologies, entitled 'Clean and efficient power generation from coal', in Gliwice, Poland, on 24 and 25 September 2009.

Less carbon intensive power generation, security of supply and emission abatement are of high importance at present. Various international, EU and national policies and financing schemes are looking to promote the implementation of new, and above all, innovative, technologies such as supercritical steam rising, co-firing and low emission combustion.

The workshop focuses on issues concerning coal-based power generation, such as efficiency increase and emission abatement technologies. Overcoming carbon dioxide (CO2) related constraints will require development and subsequent application of new technologies, including:
- supercritical CFB (circulating fluidised bed) and PF (pulverised fuel) boilers;
- direct and indirect co-firing;
- oxycoal combustion;
- coal gasification;
