An event entitled 'Inflammation and atherosclerosis' will take place from 7 to 9 September 2012 in Munich, Germany.

Atherosclerosis, the hardening and narrowing of the arteries, gets quite a lot of bad press with good reason. This progressive process silently and slowly blocks arteries, putting blood flow at risk. Atherosclerosis is the usual cause of heart attacks, strokes, and peripheral vascular disease. As a chronic inflammatory disease of the arterial wall, atherosclerosis is one of the leading causes of death and morbidity worldwide.

The event will highlight molecular mechanisms disturbing the equilibrium of vascular homeostasis, lipid accumulation, immune responses and their clearance during atherogenesis. The recent observations linking genetic variants, lipids and inflammation will be discussed, along with insights into the role of inflammatory cell subsets, their mediators and the signalling mechanisms in atheroprogression. Novel treatment options to interfere with these mechanisms, including peptide and microRNA-based therapeutics, will also be debated. For further information, please visit: http://www.abcam.com/index.html?pageconfig=resource&rid=14668
