The Fourth European Workshop on Lipid Mediators will take place from 27 to 28 September 2012 in Paris, France.

Lipid mediators are chemical messengers that are released in response to tissue injury. When a harmful invader, such as bacteria, enters the body, lipid mediators are released to help stimulate cells involved in the immune response while others help "turn off" an immune response when it is no longer needed. Current research suggests that lipid mediators, in particular prostaglandins (PGs), leukotrienes, and lipoxins, play an essential role in the different phases of inflammation. Inflammation occurs when white blood cells flood to a site of injury in the body. The increase of these white blood cells, which fight against disease-causing substances and/or heal the body, causes swelling in the body.

The workshop will be a forum for researchers to share state-of-the-art knowledge on the biochemistry, molecular biology and physiology of lipids as signalling molecules. Their role in inflammation and several disease conditions will also be discussed. For further information, please visit: http://workshop-lipid.eu/
