Microfinance is a general term to describe financial services to low-income individuals or to those who do not have access to regular banking services. It is based on the idea that low-income individuals are capable of lifting themselves out of poverty if given access to financial services. While some studies indicate that microfinance can play a role in the battle against poverty, it is also acknowledged as not always appropriate. It should never be seen as the only tool for tackling poverty.
Over the last few years, microfinance has become a large banking segment as well as a widely-practiced development tool. Several hundred millions of people living in poverty have been provided with access to savings, loans, insurance and payment services worldwide. However, the present microfinance industry is confronted with a broad range of dilemmas and unsolved problems related to the governance and management.
