An international symposium on "Modern techniques in food microbiology" will take place in Frankfurt am Main, Germany, from 27 to 28 June 1996. It is supported by the Community's specific RTD programme in the field of agriculture and fisheries (FAIR), which is coordinated by DG XII of the European Commission.

The symposium aims to demonstrate current uses and future applications of modern methods in food microbiology, as well as several innovative alternatives to traditional cultural methods. It will highlight developments in "real-time" methods and the use of molecular biology techniques. There will also be reviews on the application of modern methods to specific pathogens or their toxins.

In addition, research projects financed by the Commission in the area of food microbiology will be presented.
