The First EU Conference on Campus Companies will take place in Cork, Ireland, from 4 to 5 September 1996. It is organized by the Irish INNOVATION Relay Centre, Forbairt, and the Department of Enterprise and Employment.

The 1996 EU Green Paper on innovation identified the exploitation of research results and the development of new technology-based firms as two of the key areas for employment growth and regional development. The university campus has been identified as an important source for starting up high-tech companies. The conference therefore aims to bring key decision makers in the area of campus company development to share their experiences and assist in the formulation of EU policy in this area.

In particular, the conference will explore how campus companies can be established, nurtured and funded, the problems experienced in campus companies and the role that these companies can play in regional development. Institutes and companies participating in the conference will include the European Commission (DG XIII), Hewlett Packard, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the Elan Corporation.
