The European Parliament's Committee for Research, Technological Development and Energy is to hold a public hearing on "European Research and Development in the 21st Century", in Brussels, on 1 October 1996.

The hearing will enable MEPs on the Committee to hear the views of a wide variety of scientists and researchers from across Europe on the conditions of European RTD and the needs of the European research community. The results of the hearing will be used for the drafting of the Committee's report on the subject. This report, scheduled to be adopted by the full Parliament by the end of the year, will be submitted to the Commission as the Parliament's initial opinion on the proposed Fifth RTD Framework Programme.

The topics to be covered by the hearing are as follows:

- Major trends in basic research and the locus of knowledge production: the disappearance of disciplinary boundaries?
- Globalization, competitiveness and cooperation;
- The social context of research and development:
. Education and scientific culture;
. RTD and society;
. RTD and employment;
- The evaluation of RTD programmes;
- Structural features of EU RTD policy - a need for change?

Speakers invited to the hearing include representatives of major national and European research institutes and research associations and academics specialized in researching science policy.
