A seminar on the socio-economic and institutional dimensions in water management will be held in Ispra, Italy, on 16 December 1996. The seminar is part of the series of Blue Seminars organized by the Environment Institute of the Joint Research Centre.

The seminar, which will be conducted by F. Nunes Correia, of the Instituto Superior Técnico in Lisbon, Portugal, aims to analyse the policy formulation process in water management in the context of implementing sustainable development.

The seminar will focus on the social, economic and technological factors supporting and conditioning water policies. The differences, and common factors, in regional approaches to water management problems will also be considered. Discussions will be based on the premise that the policy formulation process needs to be examined, and new approaches developed, since sustainable development cannot be simply the result of better technologies.

The series of Blue Seminars serves as an open forum for discussion on the management of water resources in Europe. The seminars will also contribute to the work of the Commission's Task Force on water technologies.
