The third ALPS (Anthropocentric Lean Production Systems) conference will take place in Charleroi, Belgium, from 29 September 1997 to 1 October 1997. The ALPS series of Euroconferences, organized by the European Network for Integrated Materials Management (ENIMM), have been supported by the European Commission since 1995, under the Community's Human Capital and Mobility programme (HCM).

This year's conference, organized in collaboration with the Université Libre de Bruxelles, will focus on the themes of innovation, sustainable endogenous growth and virtual education. The aim is to contribute to the current debate on globalization and to develop the implementation of EVICI - the European Virtual Institute for Commerce and Industry.

Papers are currently being invited on the following or related questions:

- The effect of the current trajectory of industrial efficiency, globalization of capital, transnationalization and globalization of manufacturing, licensing, branding and services on individual regions and communities;
- Can the lessons learnt form the efficiency practices of transnationals be harnessed for new products, services or endogenously developed research?
- What are the long-term policy implications of "Sustainable Problem Solving Growth" (SPSG)?
- What is the future role of governments and international institutions, of regions and NGOs, in developing a range of options for SPSG in the next millennium?
- The use of "virtual" multimedia formats for dissemination of research through transfer into academic and lifelong learning (papers on resolving the problem of mutual qualification recognition are especially welcome).

All abstracts must be submitted by 31 May 1997 at the latest.
