International conference on privacy and data protection
The conference theme is "Privacy: the new frontier", which will be addressed by a series of lecture sessions and workshops on both general and specific themes. The event will bring together specialists from legislative authorities, companies and government bodies, as well as consumer groups from Europe, the Americas, Asia, Africa and the Pacific region.
A major question to be discussed is the European Directive on Data Protection, which is scheduled to come into force in October 1998. This includes a provision requiring non-European jurisdictions to ensure "adequate protection" before data can be transmitted from or to European countries.
Apart from this specific question, participants will have the opportunity to discuss trends in data protection and technological development, and exchange information with colleagues from other countries. In particular, discussions will address the problems for multinational firms which stem from the growth in data protection regulations at national and local levels.
In addition to the formal sessions, participants will have the opportunity to discuss topics in clinics with specialists. There will also be an Open Forum on Privacy, in which participants will be able to present papers on privacy issues for discussion.
