The Second International Conference on Technology Policy and Innovation will take place in Lisbon, Portugal, from 3 to 5 August 1998.

The conference, which will run in parallel to EXPO'98, the Lisbon World Exhibition, will focus on global and regional technology and innovation policies for achieving sustainable development in the 21st century. Emphasis will be placed on the impact of science and technology and of wealth creation on sustainability. The roles of academia, industry and government in addressing related critical challenges in a timely fashion will be analysed.

The following topics will be emphasized:

- Emerging factors in science and technology policy;
- Scope of sustainability challenges in the 21st century;
- Opportunities for achieving sustainable development through science and technology initiatives and wealth creation;
- Institutional innovations and sustainable development;
- Critical emerging and unresolved challenges - an agenda for defining the focus of future technology policy and innovation.

The organizers are seeking abstracts of papers for presentation at the conference. The deadline for submission of abstracts is 14 February 1998. In addition to the plenary sessions, four workshops will also be held, covering the following topics:

- Environmental resources management;
- Urban sustainability;
- The management and commercialization of science and technology;
- The role and future agenda of innovation centres.
