The first Internet conference on process safety will be held from 27 to 29 January 1998. The conference is being funded by the European Commission's Training and Mobility of Researchers (TMR) programme as a pilot measure for electronic conferencing.

The focus of the conference will be chemical, fire and explosion safety including the aspects of chemical and physical phenomena, technical developments and modelling. Attention will be given to the hazard of chemical reactions, runaway reactions, inherently safe processes, the development and evaluation of models and techniques for the assessment of fire and explosion risks.

The conference will be structured like a conventional conference. Papers will be presented in parallel tracks, with participants able to use hotlinks to jump between tracks. Discussion on these papers will be effected using a discussion forum, similar to a news group, where participants may put questions and points and receive answers from the authors of the papers.

In order to ensure that the informal contact between participants which is a vital part of conventional conferences is not lost, several methods to promote contact outside the formal discussion forums will also be set up. Firstly, discussion groups on broad themes relating to the conference will run for the whole conference. Secondly, a "chat room" can be set up for small groups of participants to discuss particular subjects in greater depth. Thirdly, a list of participants will be set up, through which participants can access information on each others' fields of interest and contact each other by e-mail.
