The 17th International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Fusion Energy Conference will take place in Yokohama, Japan, from 19 to 24 October 1998.

This major biennial conference provides an international forum in which to review the latest developments in the field of fusion energy science. Since the last conference in 1996 (Montreal), changes have been introduced to a number of national programmes for fusion energy research, and it is expected that advances in the understanding of plasma physics and results from large experimental devices may soon lead to the demonstration of "scientific breakeven".

Topics to be covered during the conference will include:

- Magnetic confinement experiments;
- Magnetic confinement theory and modelling;
- Plasma heating and current drive;
- ITER engineering design activities;
- Inertial fusion energy;
- Innovative concepts;
- Fusion technology and reactor concepts;
- Safety, environmental and economic aspects of fusion.

Papers on these topics, including diagnostics, fundamental processes, etc. will be considered if clearly relevant to the demonstration of fusion energy.
