A second call for proposals is expected to be published shortly in the context of the specific research and technological development programme in the field of the life sciences and technologies for developing countries (STD 3, 1990-1994). The call will cover both Area I (Improvement of living standards) and Area II (Improvement of health). STD 3, with an overall budget of ECU 110 million, aims to increase cooperation in the fields of tropical agriculture (including fisheries), medicine, health and nutrition, between scientists in Europe and in developing countries. The first call, published in mid-1991, resulted in 800 proposals from which the Commission selected 90 projects for funding.
