A total of ECU 472 million has been allocated to 132 infrastructure projects and studies under the 1998 trans-European Network transport budget. The 14 specific projects confirmed by the Essen European Council will receive almost 60% of the budget due to the fact that these will be entering the full speed construction phase between now and the year 2000. As in the last budget allocation between 1995 and 1997, the greatest support goes to rail projects (62%), with traffic management (16%) and roads (12%) in second and third place. Other projects on inland waterways and seaports were allocated around 2% of the budget with airport projects receiving 6% of the total. Of total budget, more than 53% was spent on implementation projects, 40% to direct grants and 13% to interest rebates. The remainder was granted to feasibility studies and other technical support measures.
